Havana harbor is a natural deep water port – one of only two in the Caribbean offering easy access to the Atlantic. Naturally it became a hub of maritime activity, notably the Spanish treasure fleet would put in here. The entrance to the harbor is quite narrow. This fort was built in the 16th Century, along with El Morro in the distance, to cover the entrance. It’s so narrow a heavy copper chain was stretched between them to block entrance at night.
