This spring Josef had the lead role in his school play and he rose to the occasion with aplomb! He had no trouble in the limelight, and turned in a memorable performance. He was the talk of the school that week–parents, teachers, and students alike. I was so proud to see him excel! He also gave track and field a try, competing in the long jump and 100m, but he didn’t enjoy that too much so I guess we’ll stick with theater.
During tax season, thanks to my AM Josef chauffeur, I was able to get into the climbing gym several mornings a week and I really improved a lot in my technique and strength. In May the gym hosted a climbing competition and I ended getting 2nd place in the old man category, so I was mighty pleased by that. I also took a trip down to LA in May to visit friends. I went with Naomi–Rachael’s best friend from Oregon–and we stayed with Jeanne–her best friend from New York. It was a special time for me to connect with both of them, all bonded together by love for that amazing person. We had lots of good talks by the pool eating Naomi’s ceviche and laughing and remembering, as we recovered from our 4am dance party.
Later that month I took my mom to Scotland for a trek though the highlands and we had a blast. I’ll try and put up some photos of that in a separate post. While we were gone Josef went on a huge camping trip in Eastern Oregon with the 7th grade–their “Rock Star” field trip where they study geology by day and astronomy by night. I was so bummed to miss out on that, but such is the fate of a jet setting playboy such as myself.
For Rachael’s birthday we all gathered at our house to have Thai food (one of her favorites) and then go to the Darkside Cinema to see The Mighty Peking Man, a Hong Kong schlock-fest whose absurdity almost defies description. As a connoisseur of absurdity, it was an absolutely fitting way to celebrate and remember her.
